Middle School Girls, Parents Attend Burbick Conference
Over 200 middle school girls from the Six District schools attended the Diane Burbick Math and Science Conference in November at Akron City Hospital. The conference featured interactive sessions with professional women, a panel of fathers discussing parenting issues and a conversation with guidance counselors from each high school.

Pictured at left, Major Maureen McFarland, Academic Program Director or Aeronautics at Kent State University gave the keynote address. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, she talked about her experiences as the first female navigator in her Marine Corps squadron and the third female navigator in the entire Marine Corps. Pictured at right, Ed VandenBulke, Staff Development Coordinator at Summit County Juvenile Court, was one of two fathers who discussed parenting issues.
