GRADS
Program Addresses Financial Literacy
and Child Development
GRADS
(Graduation, Reality and Dual-Role Skills), an in-school
Family and Consumer Sciences instructional and intervention
program, continued to promote personal growth, educational
competence and economic self-sufficiency for pregnant and
parenting adolescents.
The GRADS program benefited from a First Book grant which
provided 600 children’s books for GRADS students and
their children. GRADS also received a WalMart grant of $1,000
which was used for incentives, classroom supplies and the
continuing GRADS Evening Seminar.
GRADS students participated in a budget simulation specific
to a teen parent’s experience as a financial literacy
class project. Students also formed a book club and participated
in Reader’s Theater activities.
Focus on kindergarten readiness and college preparation,
as well as the use of technology, were also part of the
GRADS curriculum, according to instructors Christina Hickman
and Tanya Titus. Learn
