Providing career
programs, services and resources, the Six District
Educational Compact serves over 25,000 students
in the Cuyahoga Falls, Hudson, Kent, Stow-Munroe
Falls, Tallmadge and Woodridge school districts.
First proposed
to meet new state requirements for vocational
training access for high school students, the
Six District Educational Compact was approved
in 1969.
Lauded for its cost efficiency, the Compact
was the first of its kind in Ohio.
With NO
VOTED MILLAGE, the Compact provides significant
cost savings for the taxpayers served by the
six school districts.
By combining the resources of the six
districts, cost-effective services, programs
and special events are available to students
and residents of all six communities.
The Compact. s
success in providing career programs at the
high school level led to an expanded role, serving
students at all grade levels, school staff
and community members as well.
Today, the Compact offers 25 different
Career
Programs, including three College Tech
Prep initiatives, the Manufacturing and
Pre-Engineering Academy, A+ Certification
and Networking and the new Athletic Health
Care and Fitness College Tech Prep initiative.
Career Programs cover a wide variety
of fields, including Health Careers Technologies,
Urban Forestry/Landscape Horticulture, Remodeling
and Construction, Collision Repair and Auto
Refinishing, Culinary Arts and Catering, Career
Paths for the Teaching Professional and more.
The Pathway Project,
which explores Career Pathway options and other
change initiatives for the six high schools,
is an ongoing Compact project that supports
career awareness and career development, which
are all connected to the teaching and learning
process.
Career-related
services provided by the Compact include
a career assessment center, Career Technical/Special
Education services, and Option 4, a transitional
work-study program that helps place students
with disabilities into competitive employment.
Over the years,
linkages with higher education were strengthened,
as were ties to community agencies.
In the 1980s, the Compact added new services
including summer school courses, a G.E.D. testing
center and the C.A.R.E. program for substance
abuse prevention and intervention. Special
events were initiated as well, including
the Reading and Writing Festival for middle
school students held each year at Kent State
University.
Others include the Diane Burbick Math
and Science Conference for Middle School Girls
and Leadership Conference for Middle School
Students.
Programs added
since 1990 include Compact Adult Basic Literacy
Education (ABLE),
which provides a variety of adult education
classes and G.E.D. preparation at eight sites;
the Summit Educational Link for Families (SELF),
a family literacy project offering a preschool
program, and Saturday Family Workshop offered
through C.A.R.E. In addition to these, the
Compact's Proficiency Test Preparation program,
Human Resource Development program offered to
community organizations and businesses, and
Professional Development workshops for Compact
support staff illustrate the variety of services
offered to community members in the six districts.
In 1997, the Compact
joined with Summa Health System to form the
award-winning Summa Compact Partnership, providing
innovative, collaborative and non-traditional
learning opportunities for students, counselors,
teachers, parents and administrators from the
six districts.
Partnership highlights include job shadowing
and internship opportunities at Akron City and
St. Thomas hospitals, as well as the annual
Diane Burbick Math and Science Conference for
Middle School Girls.
As the Compact
enters its third century, the Pathway Project
continues to take the lead in exploring new
change initiatives, using the Pathway Guiding
Principles to help direct the structure of both teaching and learning.
After an extensive Compact-wide study,
an expansion of College Tech Prep initiatives,
as well as Career Programs, is underway.
"The Six District
Educational Compact focuses on collaboration,
innovation and continuation of our programs
and initiatives," says Compact Executive Director
Mary Jane Stanchina. "Each year, we strive
to provide programs and services which will
make a positive difference in the lives of students
and staff members in the six districts we serve."
